Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare your cake pans
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda, and salt
- In a large bowl, whisk the egg, vegetable oil, buttermilk, vinegar, and vanilla extract
- Add red gel food coloring to the wet ingredients until desired color is achieved
- Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing until just combined
- Divide batter evenly between prepared pans and bake for 20-25 minutes
- Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely
- For the frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth, then add vanilla and powdered sugar gradually
- Assemble the cake by leveling the layers, frosting between layers, and applying a crumb coat
- Chill the cake, then frost the top and sides, and decorate as desired before serving
